thoughts from a fat man

My father-in-law has begun to lose some weight. I am a little jealous that he seems to have lost it so quickly, but then I realized how much work he has put into it. He not only has been eating better, but has been getting some good exercise at the YMCA.

He has been doing this water work out and both he and my wife have told me how much of an actual work out it is. Now according to the both of them, this isn’t the normal water work out that the old ladies sit and chat at. This is a full fledged work out in the water as I understand it. It sounds like a lot of sweating in dirty chlorine to me and for this reason, I think I will pass.

I used to be a life guard, but never really cared much for swimming. I was a runner (notice I said was) and I enjoyed running immensely. My father-in-law is trying to get me back into swimming. I don’t doubt that swimming is good exercise, but I really started to think about it. If swimming is such good exercise, then why aren’t whales slimmer? These are some of the largest creatures in the world and they swim everywhere and I have never seen an emaciated whale. I think I will stick to running. I know it is harder on my body, but I enjoy it much more then swimming.

Now I just have to find the time to get some exercise in. I am getting desperate. I am wondering if there some tasks that I do in a day that would count as good physical exercise. I shoveled snow the other day, does that count as aerobic exercise? How about just keeping warm at -22°F? It has been negative zero for about two weeks straight. It is definitely to cold to go walking/jogging outside!

I will come up with a plan after this weekend.
